Thanks John! There are some awesome examples out there. I’m excited to see that companies from multiple industries are going responsive. Have you seen this example? It’s an ecommerce site with a responsive design. Very cool!

Great question! It’s a huge issue right now for responsive designs. In his book, Responsive Web Design, Ethan Marcotte suggests using the style “max-width: 100%” to make images and video scale appropriately. However, older browsers (IE6) don’t support max-width, and Windows has a problem with image quality when scaling images (the smaller the image, the worse it looks – lots of artifacts). He recommends a few hacks and workarounds in his book though. You can find his book at http://www.abookapart.com/products/responsive-web-design

On the other hand, I found two articles about “adaptive images.” Each includes a hack (one server side and one client side) that allows you to adapt the image size based on the screen size:

As usual with technology, there doesn’t appear to be a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s still a trial and error sort of thing. If anyone else has a resource to share on this topic, please do!

Is display/image quality also becoming an issue related to this topic (e.g. higher resolution tablet displays)? Or is that more related to apps built for older hardware?
